NAHS Announces Name Change to Ballenas Housing Society

Nanaimo Affordable Housing Society has changed its name to Ballenas Housing Society to better reflect the growing number of communities it serves on Vancouver Island.

Established in 1990 by a group of concerned community members in response to the lack of affordable family rental housing in Nanaimo, the Society acquired funding to build and operate its first family housing project in 1996.

The name change has inspired a refresh of the mission and vision statements as well as redevelopment of the Society logo and a much more user-friendly website.

Ballenas continues its commitment to develop and operate inclusive housing communities appropriate to support tenants in achieving and maintaining stability and wellbeing.

Currently operating over 650 rental homes across central Nanaimo, the Society has a further 140 units under construction and expected to open this year. The complex at 364 Moilliet Street in Parksville includes an apartment building and townhomes set to open in May 2023. Another 4-storey apartment building at 6010 Hammond Bay Road will open in late 2023. These developments are designed for independent adults, persons with disabilities and small families.

“As one of the largest non-profit housing developer/operators on Vancouver Island, we are truly excited to announce the rebrand to Ballenas Housing Society as we continue to grow further afield.” (David Brooks, Board Chair)

The Society’s official website is now accessible under the domain www.ballenas.ca and its email address changed to the domain @ballenas.ca.
