About Us

Established in 1990, Ballenas Housing Society (Ballenas) is a non-profit registered charity governed by a committed and diverse volunteer Board of Directors.

Our current property portfolio includes over 850 homes designed for low-to-moderate income independent seniors, persons with disabilities and small families living in the regional district. Ballenas communities offer a mix of rental rates based on demonstrated need from deep subsidy to low end of market and rent geared to income (RGI).

Over the past decade, Ballenas properties have received Municipal Design and Commercial Building Awards. In 2022, our 10 Buttertubs building received the Award of Merit from the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board.

Mission – To develop and operate well-maintained housing for people with low to moderate income, while promoting inclusive and diverse communities.

Vision – Providing innovative and viable housing options for future generations.

Because of our recognition and reputation in the community, Ballenas is often the first point of contact for information on non-market housing on the Island. We receive well over 200 calls per month from individuals, couples and families seeking affordable housing options in the region.

Ballenas communities comprise a mix of building typologies for independent single adults, couples and families experiencing housing affordability difficulties, accessibility, and disability challenges.

While our homes are designed for independent residents, Ballenas has several invaluable community partnerships on Vancouver Island to support the health and wellbeing of our tenants. These include BC Housing, Island Health, Haven Society, Nanaimo Association for Community Living, BC Pensioners and Seniors Organization, Vancouver Island Mental Health Society, Vancouver Island Vocational Rehabilitation Society, Nanaimo Family Life Association, and many others.

In addition, negotiated agreements with established organizations mean discounted costs for our residents to access local services including activities for seniors, phone, internet, cable, and medical alert services.

Ballenas serves as a mentor for other housing providers across Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast. We are an active member of both the BC Non-Profit Housing Association (BCNPHA) and the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association (CHRA).
